What’s New? Light table and folding bookcase update…
Recently Eastern Hills Community Kindergarten and Playgroup received the delivery of a brand-new light table and folding bookcase as a result of a matching grant from the Shire of Mundaring and generous donations from our valued sponsors First National Real Estate Genesis, White's Mill & Grind, Russell- Smith & Co, Speak Up Speech Therapy and Amaroo Retreat.
The bookcase from DVA fabrications is an upgrade from our old bookcase unit that was no longer fit for purpose. Our new folding bookcase will allow teaching staff and students easier access to reading material and give our kindy students a library experience right here in their very own classroom helping to improve early math and literacy skills. The larger bookcase has also improved the look and feel of our library area inside the kindy classroom area and is being enjoyed already by our students and playgroup families. Having a dedicated and comfortable reading area can influence children and families to read and encourage them to spend more reading in a cosy corner. Reading alone, with a teacher or a parent can improve the child’s confidence and encourage them to read more often.
Our light table also purchased from DVA Fabrications is an exciting new addition to our kindy classroom and is being utilised by our kindergarten students to improve math and literacy skills also. The light table will be used to enhance sensory play opportunities and encourage a range of skills and development such as, fine motor development, pre-writing skills, hand and eye coordination, colour recognition. There are many benefits ecducational sensory benefits using light tables in Kindy & Playgroups. The first is the benefit of learning with light. Light is a fantastic source of visual sensory input. Children are drawn to light and can often find it calming to interact with the glow of a light table. Teachers even say it keeps a child’s attention for longer periods of time than other learning activities! It also makes activities more entertaining and engaging then without light. Some of our favourite light table accessories help young children develop letter recognition, colour practice, problem-solving skills, building and puzzle techniques and many other positive benefits.
